London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week is a clothing trade show held in London twice each year, in February and September. It is one of the "Big Four" fashion weeks, along with the New York, Milan and Paris. It first took place in 1984 and was organised by the British Fashion Council. It is currently sponsored by Toni and Guy, and Mercedes-Benz.  It states that it is attended by over 5,000 press and buyers, and has estimated orders of £40 million or £100 million. Also London Fashion Weekend, a retail- focused event, takes place immediately afterwards at the same venue and is open to the general public. As a fashion student, I get really excited when fashion week rolls around. I'm always excited to see the new trends and new creative ideas designers will have come up with in their collections. Looking at fashion week helps me when I am designing for a new project as it helps me to know the current trends and what's new and exciting. I like to base my designs mainly off current trends that I'm into and think work really well with the topic I am designing with.

Other Events

Aside from New York, Milan and Paris Fashion Week, there are many other events like them such as Berlin Fashion Week and Shanghai Fashion Week. There are also smaller events such as The Clothes Show Live that takes place in the UK, and shows smaller designers' work on the catwalk.
What is a Trend Predictor?

A Trend Predictor is someone who collects information, inspirational images and facts to predict the upcoming fashion for the next season. They look at past trends and collect research and data to what could possibly take over in the next year.

Job Role

Trend Forecaster's often travel to different cities to gather research and try to then predict trends from reports. They look at street fashion, architecture and sometimes just random things from the streets such as things in markets or shops. They see which stores are trending before they travel to a city and also do countless amounts of research on where they should gather ideas from when they arrive.

What is a Trend Journal?

Trend journals provide extensive research and analysis on the latest global fashion trends. And also include fashion and design businesses with the intelligence to create commercially viable products. Trend journals give the reader there predictions on upcoming fashion that could be popular in the next year or so.

A Trend Organisation
PatternCurator

PatternCurator is a trend forecast company focused on print, pattern & color inspiration.  Their goal is to inspire artists and designers to create while making a contribution to cultivate a new creative future.
I think this organisation is helpful to any trend forecaster as they provide information about past and current trends, whats going on around the world that could influence fashion and also does most of this in moodboard form so it is easy to gather information from.

As a Fashion Student...

As a fashion student I use trend information when I am designing, as I like to do research on my topic, I mainly use Pinterest for this as its full of great inspiration for the topic I could be designing around, such as architecture, I would look at buildings from around the World and also fashion that is taken from architecture. I would also look at past fashion trends to do with this topic and current trends to see if any trends would make a come back and if they would be suitable in my collection.

Trend Forecasters

Trend Forecaster WGSN has over 75,000 customers, that pay thousands of dollars a year for its services, these services include consulting with customers, who are the ones to pay them, about trends for the upcoming seasons. Companies such as Marks and Spencer, Nordstrom and designers like Rebecca Taylor are paying clients. How much they pay each year varies because fees are negotiated, but the number can easily reach the five figures depending on how many log-ins are required.

Pop up store iddy biddy from maisie o'dowd

During this presentation, I think what went well was that the topic of the presentation was clear and everyone in the audience seemed interested in the topic and clear feedback was given. I think we did well with explaining our pop up store and gave a lot of information about it, but I think what I personally could have done better was speak up more during the presentation and also make eye contact more with the audience. What well overall was the actual presentation and layout of the PowerPoint as it looks clean and bright which makes the it look nice for the audience to look at.
Trend Prediction and Fashion Forecasting

Trend Prediction is when the fashion forecast is based on data from past trends. It uses time series data, which is data where the value is known over different points in time. This data is usually plotted on a graph, the graph showing the time, like the year, and the information you are trying to predict, such as sales amounts or number of people. .

Fashion Forecasting focuses on upcoming trends that are recognized world wide. A fashion forecaster predicts the colour, fabrics, textures, materials, prints, graphics, beauty, accessories, footwear, street style, and other styles that are presents on the runway by couture designers and in the stores for the upcoming seasons.

                            Ecological and Social

Social

Karl Lagerfield in 2013, reportedly was heard fat-shaming plus sized models saying 'No- one wants to see curvy women on the runway', and was also caught stating that the singer, Adele, was 'a little too fat'. Lagerfield has never been one to sensor his thoughts and later responded to the controversy saying, 'But after that she lost eight kilo, so I think the message was not that bad'.

Because of the comments he made on plus sized models, he faced legal action in France after a women's pressure group filed a defamation claim against him for the comments made. The group 'Belle, Ronde, Sexy et Je M'assume, which translates Beautiful, Rounded. Sexy and Ok With It - want to see Chanel's creative director fined for his 'defamatory and discriminatory comments' towards some women.
The group state, 'We're fed up, many young girls are insecure and hearing such comments is terrible for them, particularity from famous people. Today it's him who insults us and tomorrow who will it be?'
